Nov. 30--Cyber Mondays of the future could mean more crowded skies.
Amazon.com Inc. has released new details about its proposed Prime Air service, a drone delivery system the company said will carry packages to customers in 30 minutes or less and will someday be as common as "mail trucks on the road."
There's no concrete timeline for its launch, but Amazon said it will deploy its fleet of drones when it has the "regulatory support needed to safely realize" its vision. Amazon has Prime Air development centers in the U.S., Britain and Israel.
In the few details released on its website Sunday, Amazon said its drones will carry packages weighing up to 5 pounds. The drones themselves will weigh less than 55 pounds and fly at an altitude under 400 feet to distances of 10 miles or more.
The company said it has more than a dozen prototypes that have been developed in its labs.
