BRIEF: Aldermen propose banning drones near Chicago airports

July 29--Drones and remote-controlled airplanes would be banned from flying within 5 miles of Chicago airports, and operators of the unmanned craft would be required to carry insurance and register the devices with the city under a proposal introduced to the City Council on Wednesday.

Registering the drones and planes would cost $50 annually, and an insurance policy would be required to cover personal injury and property damage, according to the proposal introduced by Ald. Edward Burke, 14th, and Ald. Scott Waguespack, 32nd.

It would be illegal to use the flying craft to conduct surveillance or to carry weapons, or to fly them near churches, schools and hospitals. In addition, the Chicago Park District would be allowed to designate areas where the planes and drones would be allowed.

Using the model planes or drones would be outlawed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Violators would face fines from $500 to $5,000 and up to 180 days in jail, according to the proposal.

The ordinance was sent to the Aviation Committee for further consideration.
