BRIEF: Actors Theatre receives $1.2 million from Powerball winner

June 16--Actors Theatre of Louisville is the latest recipient of a large grant from Roy Cockrum, the Tennessee Powerball winner who took home $259 million ($115 million after taxes) last June.

A spokeswoman for the theater -- widely known for its annual Humana Festival of New American Plays -- said Tuesday that it has received $1.2 million from Cockrum to support its apprentice/intern company. Cockrum is known to have ties to the Kentucky theater.

Actors Theatre is the third regional theater to benefit from The Roy Cockrum Foundation since it began giving out money in March, but it's the first for which the funds are meant to go toward an initiative, the apprentice/intern company, rather than a production of a specific new play.

In Chicago, the Goodman and Steppenwolf Theatres received unspecified amounts from Cockrum for their respective upcoming productions of "2666" and Tracy Letts' new play "Mary Page Marlowe." Those grants are thought to be in the same range as this newest one.
