BRIEF: About 20 puppies taken from Back of the Yards home after fire

Feb. 16--About 20 puppies were taken from a home in the Back of the Yards neighborhood after firefighters extinguished a small fire there Monday afternoon, according to authorities.

Firefighters were called to the 2 1/2-story frame home in the 4300 block of South Hermitage Avenue about 1:25 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Fire crews were initially told someone may have not been accounted for, but that turned out not to be true, according to Chief Juan Hernandez, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

Firefighters found about 20 dogs inside the home that were not injured, and the city Animal Care and Control Department was notified.

Representatives for that city agency weren't available to comment.
