BRIEF: About 1 million Trek bikes recalled for faulty quick-release lever on wheel

April 24--Nearly 1 million Trek bicycles are being recalled because a quick-release lever over the bike's front wheel can cause the brakes to lock suddenly or separate from the bike, a defect that has resulted in at least one rider becoming paralyzed.

This recall includes Trek bikes from 2000 through 2015 equipped with front disc brakes and a black or silver quick release lever on the front wheel hub that opens far enough to contact the disc brake.

The bikes were sold nationwide from September 1999 to this month for between $480 and $1,650.

Consumers are asked to stop using the bicycles immediately and contact a Trek retailer for free installation of a new quick release lever.

Trek has reported three injuries related to the recalled bikes. One suffered a broken wrist, another sustained facial injuries and the third became a quadriplegic.
