BRIEF: A new name for sea otter Pup 681, live Friday

Dec. 11--The new, friendlier name for Pup 681, the Shedd Aquarium's rescued baby sea otter and resident media darling, will be announced at 8 a.m. Friday, the morning after voting was scheduled to end, the aquarium said Thursday.

Beginning Dec. 2, the Shedd and ABC's "Good Morning America" sponsored a "Name the Sea Otter Pup" vote, asking people to choose from one of five proffered names. The names -- Cali, Ellie, Luna, Poppy and Ana -- all have significance in the life of the pup, who was believed to be a week old when she was rescued Sept. 30 on a beach in central California. She was placed with the Shedd at 5 weeks old and less than 6 lbs.

Since then, aquarium YouTube videos of her have drawn nearly 5 million views. Voting was still open Thursday via the Shedd and "Good Morning America" websites. People can witness the name unveiling live Friday in a Shedd Google Hangout On Air session.
