BRIEF: 1 killed, 8 injured in North Hills after driver runs red light and crashes into van, LAPD says

April 18--A man was killed and eight others were injured Sunday after a sport utility vehicle ran a red light in North Hills and slammed into a van, police said.

More than 60 firefighters responded to the scene following the crash, in which the van rolled over, ejecting several occupants.

The crash occurred about 1 p.m. in the 8700 block of Haskell Avenue, said Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Eight of the nine injured were also hospitalized in potentially critical condition, and of those wounded, three children were taken via helicopter to local pediatric trauma centers, Scott said.

A 37-year-old man who had been riding in the van was later pronounced dead, police said. His identity was not released.

It's unclear if the driver of the sport utility vehicle was injured. The collision was still under investigation by the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division.

The Fire Department has asked the mayor's Crisis Response Team to provide assistance to a family affected by the "traumatic incident," Scott said.
