BRIEF: 5 injured after van crashes while fleeing cops, authorities say

July 28--A silver van led police on an 8-mile chase through the West and South sides before crashing into two other vehicles, sending five people to hospitals, police said.

About 10:30 p.m., police officers in the East Garfield Park neighborhood saw shots being fired from a vehicle at another vehicle, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Officers began chasing a silver van involved in the incident from the 3200 block of West Carroll Avenue south on Western Avenue. Police noted over the radio that the van had its sliding door open, and a handful of people could be seen inside.

The chase ended at 59th Street and Western Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood when the van sped through a stoplight and hit two other vehicles, Alfaro said.

Four people from those vehicles were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition. The driver of the van was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, Alfaro said.

The driver along with three other people were taken into custody, but there was no word on charges, police said.
