BRIEF: 8 injured in multivehicle crash that temporarily closed the southbound lanes of Dan Ryan

Feb. 15--A multivehicle crash on the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway left eight injured, including four children, and temporarily closed down lanes Sunday afternoon, according to Illinois State Police and Chicago Fire Department officials.

The accident, which was reported at 3:39 p.m., was near the 71st Street exit on the southbound Dan Ryan, police said.

The accident may have involved three vehicles, though one of the vehicles may have left the area traveling north in the southbound lanes, police said.

A staging area was set up near the 51st Street exit, according to a Chicago Fire Department official.

Fire Department paramedics were called, and multiple ambulances were sent to the scene, according to officials.

Paramedics took three people in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital along with a fourth patient, a child, who was in fair-to-serious condition, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

Four other people, including three children, were taken in good-to-fair condition to St. Bernard Hospital, according to the spokesman.

Officials temporarily closed down the southbound lanes and later reopened them after the accident was cleared, officials said.
