BRIEF: More than 100 kids taken to hospitals as precaution after high carbon monoxide levels at grade school

Dec. 03--More than 100 students from a South Side elementary school were taken to hospitals as a precaution after high carbon monoxide levels were detected as classes began Thursday morning, officials said.

Newly installed detectors were tripped around 8 a.m. at the Horace Mann school at 8050 S. Chappel Ave., which houses students from third through eighth grade, according to school and fire officials.

A hazardous materials alert was called and the school was evacuated. Seven staff members and 104 students were taken to hospitals as a precaution, the fire department said. They were listed as in "very good" condition.

Classes were held in the school's annex for the rest of the day, officials said.

The building only had one carbon monoxide detector until it installed a dozen devices in the building during the past month as part of a broad effort to equip schools with more detectors after an incident at a Northwest Side school sickened dozens of students and teachers.
