BRIEF: 6th person charged in fatal shooting outside Calumet City's River Oaks mall

Jan. 11--A sixth person has been charged in the September fatal shooting of an 18-year-old outside River Oaks shopping mall in Calumet City.

Willie Shannon, 22, was charged with murder Saturday for his alleged role in the death of Ike King, of South Holland.

Shannon joined a group of teens who followed an 18-year-old man from a McDonald's to River Oaks after noticing that he had paid for his food with "a big wad of cash," said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Camilo Oceguera.

The group followed the victim to a gas station in a van, prosecutors said, where the victim left his car before heading over to the mall, prosecutors said.

Outside the mall, Shannon and two others confronted the victim and tried to rob him, prosecutors said. King tried to get away and was shot from behind.

Earlier reports said King was with a friend during the attempted robbery, but prosecutors said Saturday that only King was shot.

Shannon was not the shooter but was charged with murder because the killing occurred during the commission of a robbery, prosecutors said.
