March 18--Six people, including a firefighter, were taken to area hospitals following a fire at a South Shore apartment building, fire officials said.
The fire in the four-story courtyard building in the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue was called in about 9:20 a.m. The fire was out by about 10 a.m.
Five people, including children and adults, were taken to area hospitals in good condition, and a firefighter also was injured, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The firefighter suffered heat-related injuries and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital.
Two people were rescued out a front window on the second floor by firefighters from the first arriving firetruck.
"First companies showed up, they had heavy fire on the second floor," Deputy District Chief Jeffrey Mayer said. "The first truck compnay made two rescues from the second floor. One adult, one child."
A warming bus parked near 79th Street for residents who were displaced, and the fire department notified the city's Health and Human Services department.
