June 19--A semitrailer driver fell asleep and slammed into 13 cars in a construction zone on Interstate 55 near Summit, sending at least six people to hospitals, none with injuries thought life-threatening, state police said.

The crash happened around 3:40 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes of I-55 south of First Avenue, state police said.

Six people were taken to area hospitals with injuries, said Illinois State Police Trooper Julien Torres.

Nine other people refused medical attention on the scene, Torres said.

As of 6 a.m., all northbound lanes on I-55 south of First Avenue were reopened.
