BRIEF: 6 high school students sickened by cleaning fumes

Oct. 19--Six high school students were taken to a hospital after suffering respiratory problems from cleaning fumes Monday morning on the Southwest Side, fire officials said.

It happened about 9:30 a.m. at Curie High School, 4959 S. Archer Ave., according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The school had been cleaned over the weekend and "residual'' fumes from cleaning chemicals caused them to have respiratory problems, Langford said.

Six were taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital, and they are expected to be released "shortly,'' Langford said.

Firefighters were able to secure the scene, and a hazardous materials response was called off.
