BRIEF: 6-foot alligator removed from south suburban home

Jan. 23--A 6-foot alligator was removed from a south suburban home last week, state and local officials confirmed Friday.

Police Chief Dennis Murrin Jr. said the incident was a first for Lansing.

"In 25 years, I've never had anything like it," he said.

Murrin said the village's animal control officer called in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, to wrangle the reptile. "They were just great," he said, adding it "was in a tube" when he arrived on the scene.

He referred all questions, including the alligator's location and owner, to IDNR.

Chris Young of the IDNR said Conservation Police and Lansing police "confiscated" the reptile Jan. 16 "without incident." Young said he had no further information.

Local veterinary practices said they were unaware of the alligator when contacted about the issue.
