BRIEF: 5 taken to hospitals after falling ill at Budlong Woods nursing home

Feb. 28--Five people from a nursing home were taken to hospitals Saturday afternoon after falling ill, authorities said.

At least six ambulances were sent to a nursing home at 5336 N. Western Ave. in the city's Budlong Woods neighborhood about 3:45 p.m. when people fell ill, said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez.

Five adults were taken to area hospitals and all their conditions have stabilized, Velez said.

Three victims were taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital and two to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, said Velez, who referred further questions to the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It was not clear what symptoms they suffered but a police source said the victims suffered possible drug overdoses.

A spokeswoman for the nursing home said they were not making any comments.

A CDC representative was not immediately available and an IDPH spokeswoman did not immediately have information.
