Dec. 27--Five people were seriously injured in a car crash in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood early Sunday morning, authorities confirmed.
About 12:10 a.m., a Cadillac Escalade driving on Damen Avenue was crossing 18th Street at a green light when a Nissan Altima driving east on 18th Street ran a red light and hit the Escalade, according to Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
The Escalade rolled onto its side, Greer said. The Altima ended up on the sidewalk outside Orozco Community Academy with its front end crushed.
Five people went to hospitals in serious-to-critical condition -- three to Stroger Hospital and two to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder. Information was not immediately available about their ages or genders.
