BRIEF: 5 displaced after fire at Grand Crossing building

Jan. 01--Three children and two adults were displaced after a fire Friday afternoon at a building in the city's Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

The fire started shortly before 1 p.m. inside a 1 1/2-story building at 7717 S. Maryland Ave., according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Officials said the fire was throughout the building, but as of 1:20 p.m., no one had been reported injured.

Officials added there were live wires down on the north side of the building, and ComEd was being called to the scene.

The Department of Human Services was called to assist at least five people who were living at the building, officials said

As of 1:30 p.m., the alarm had been struck out, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
