BRIEF: 42 Grams closed for 'family emergency'

Sept. 16--A family matter has caused the temporary closure of two-Michelin-star restaurant 42 Grams (4662 N. Broadway).

Bad luck for the customers who were planning to dine there this week, but no doubt worse luck for chef Jake Bickelhaupt and his wife, Alexa Welsh, who would much rather be running their acclaimed restaurant right now.

"It probably seems strange to close," Welsh said via email, "but most restaurants, if the chef/owners/operators are suddenly called away or have to address a family emergency, there is a team to ensure the show goes on. With us, it's just two people, so we have to close to attend to those matters."

And let's face it, when people come to 18-seat 42 Grams, they want to see Bickelhaupt by the stove and Welsh running the dining room.

"We're taking it day by day," Welsh said, "and hope to be back up and running ASAP."
