BRIEF: 4 taken to hospitals from Near North Side office building

July 14--Four people were taken to hospitals after complaining of eye irritation at a River North office building, but no harmful fumes were found by the time fire crews investigated, a fire official said.

Firefighters were called to the building at 225 W. Superior St. at 11:40 a.m., according to Fire Department spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva.

Officials called for a hazardous materials response to deal with possible fumes and an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1, which sends at least six ambulances to the scene.

One person was taken to Rush University Medical Center in fair-to-serious condition with breathing problems, and three others were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good-to-fair condition, Roccasalva said.

People left the building because of the possibility of hazardous gases, but fire crews were unable to detect any noxious gases, Roccasalva said.
