5 men wounded in West, South side shootings

Dec. 04--Five men were wounded in shootings on the West and South sides since midday Thursday, Chicago police said.

Just before midnight, a 19-year-old man was shot in North Austin, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.

He was driving east in the 5600 block of West Division Street when someone in a dark sedan going the other direction fired shots, Greer said. He was hit in the leg, crashed into a pole and was taken to Stroger Hospital. His condition was stabilized.

Shortly before 3 p.m., two men were wounded in the 5500 block of West Madison Street in the South Austin neighborhood, police said.

A 37-year-old man was shot twice in the back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

The other man, described as in his 40s, suffered a wound to his left arm. He was taken to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, police said.

About two hours earlier in the same neighborhood, a 33-year-old man was shot in the leg. The shooting happened about 12:50 p.m. in the 100 block of South Central Avenue, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Zala said.

Shortly before noon, a man was wounded in the 6800 block of South Ashland Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said.

The man was shot in the ankle and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, police said.
