BRIEF: 4 charged in stabbing attack on brother, sister

June 08--Four people have been charged with attempted murder after a mob stabbing attack on a brother and sister in the Canaryville neighborhood last month, according to police.

The attack happened about 3:20 a.m. May 30 in the 700 block of West Root Street, when four people began fighting with an adult brother and sister on the street, police said.

Courtney Vega, 19, Joya Urbikas, 18, David Rice, 21, and Kevin Hoynes, 21, were charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony aggravated battery, aggravated use of a deadly weapon and mob action in connection to the attack, police said.

The victims, a 30-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man, were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition and were treated for stab wounds.

The attackers were later identified and arrested without incident, police said.

In bond court on Sunday, Hoynes was given $175,000 bail, Vega $150,000, and Rice and Urbitas both $75,000.
