Feb. 04--The jackpot for the multistate Powerball lottery, which includes California, is expected to balloon to $317 million for Wednesday night's drawing, lottery officials said.
Players failed to match all six numbers during Saturday's drawing but five tickets, including one purchased in a tobacco shop in California, picked five of the six numbers and won about $1 million. The drawing was for a nearly $290-million jackpot.
The Powerball prize has been rolling over since a single ticket won $90 million on Nov. 29, California Lottery officials said.
The game is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The largest Powerball jackpot in 2014 was $425.3 million and was won by a person in Milpitas. Californians won four Powerball jackpots last year, the state lottery said.
Powerball tickets are $2 and can be purchased up to an hour before the drawing, which is at 7:59 p.m. PST every Wednesday and Saturday.
