BRIEF: 31 people arrested after 5-hour police standoff in Edgewater

May 11--Thirty-one people face misdemeanor charges after after a five-hour standoff with SWAT teams at an Edgewater apartment building over the weekend, according to police.

Thirteen men, 17 women and a girl, 17, were all charged with disorderly conduct.

The standoff began after officers pulled over a vehicle around 11:20 p.m. Friday for a minor traffic violation in the 6300 block of North Lakewood Avenue, police said.

People attending a party at an apartment on the block began yelling at the officers, police said. Soon afterward, the officers heard shots and thought the gunfire came from a second-floor apartment where the party was taking place, police said.

About 6 a.m. Saturday, people inside the second-floor apartment surrendered and were detained for questioning, police said.

Police initially said the SWAT response was prompted by a gunman firing shots at officers, but an investigation later revealed that the gunfire actually came from an area behind the apartment building, police said.

A search of the apartment uncovered a weapon and shell casings thought to be from a previous shooting, police said.
