2 killed, 6 wounded in separate shootings

Aug. 20--Two men were killed and six other people, including a 14-year-old boy, have been wounded in separate shootings across the city since Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Most recently, a 23-year-old man, identified by family members as Isaac Acevedo Jr., was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting around 1:10 a.m. Thursday in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said.

Acevedo was sitting in the front passenger's seat of a dark Mazda traveling south near North Central Park Avenue and West Schubert Avenue when a white SUV pulled alongside and someone started firing, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Acevedo's girlfriend, who was driving the Mazda, was struck by broken glass and was taken to the hospital, police said.

About 10 minutes earlier, at 1 a.m., a 17-year-old boy was wounded in a drive-by shooting about a mile and a half away in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro.

The teen was standing on the corner in the 3000 block of North California Avenue when someone fired shots at him from a passing white SUV, Alfaro said.

The teen was grazed in the head and was taken to Norwegian American Hospital where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

Police could not immediately say whether the two shootings were related.
