1 dead, 6 injured in separate city shootings

Nov. 24--One man has died and six others were injured in separate shootings Monday across the city, Chicago police said.

The fatal shooting claimed the life of a 24-year-old man who lived in the 3500 block of North Linder Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name was not immediately being made public because his family was not yet notified.

He was shot in the back about 6 p.m. Monday in the 5600 block of West Byron Street on the city's Northwest Side, according to police. He was initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.

The most recent shooting wounded a 16-year-old girl in the Brighton Park neighborhood, police said. She was shot about 10:45 p.m. Monday in the 3700 block of South Albany Avenue on the Southwest Side. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with wounds to her abdomen, and her condition had been stabilized, police said. Someone either fired from a passing red sedan or stepped from a red sedan before opening fire, police said.

About 10:40 p.m. Monday, a 35-year-old man was shot in the 4200 block of West Van Buren Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side during an attempted robbery, police said. He was walking when two men wearing all black tried to rob him at gunpoint. A struggle ensued and the 35-year-old was shot in the leg, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

A 19-year-old man was shot about 7:50 p.m. Monday in the 2600 block of East 74th Place in the South Shore neighborhood , said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman. Police previously gave the address as the 7500 block of South Exchange Avenue. The man was shot in the back, Sweeney said. The victim was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

At the same time as the 74th Place shooting, a 20-year-old man was shot in the 1500 block of South Tripp Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, Sweeney said. The man was shot in the leg, Sweeney said, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition had stabilized. He may have shot himself, police said. The victim was not cooperating with police, officials said.

About 5:20 p.m. Monday, a 40-year-old man was shot in the parking lot of a restaurant during a drug deal in the Montclare neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said. The shooting happened about 5:20 p.m. in the 6600 block of West Fullerton Avenue, near where it intersects with Grand Avenue. The man was left in critical condition and taken to Loyola University Medical Center.

At 1:35 p.m. a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 5200 block of South Racine Avenue, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Sweeney said. The man, who is a known gang member, was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health care Center, where his condition had stabilized, Sweeney said.
