BRIEF: 3 cops responding to officer distress call involved in West Side crash

June 09--Three police officers responding to an officer in distress in the Austin neighborhood were injured in a car crash Monday afternoon.

They were taken to "area hospitals with minor injuries," according to a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The crash happened about 2:25 p.m. in the 700 block of South Laramie Avenue. The squad car was traveling north on Laramie Avenue when a Subaru Impreza tried to pass traffic stopped on Flournoy Street and hit the squad car, police said.

The driver of that car, 64, and an 80-year-old passenger, had minor injuries and were taken to Stroger Hospital, authorities said.

The call to which police were responding -- officer in distress -- resulted in an officer being taken to an area hospital with wounds to the face after a man hit him with his fist.

It's not clear what happened in that incident, which occurred in the 5100 block of West Madison Street. Charges are pending against the man.
