Jan. 15--On a day when Los Angeles officials had hoped to launch their campaign for the 2024 Summer Games, the International Olympic Committee opened bidding with a new kind of procedure.
As part of an "invitation" phase, potential hosts were encouraged on Thursday to submit their initial ideas for discussion with -- and feedback from -- the IOC.
Los Angeles will not be a part of that experiment, having lost a close competition with Boston to be the U.S.'s sole bid city.
The IOC wants to make the process less expensive in accordance with its recently adopted Agenda 2020 reforms.
Bidders have been advised to focus on the use of existing and temporary venues. A more informal process could also decrease costs. The IOC said it will contribute $1.5 billion to the staging of the Games.
Cities must officially commit to a bid by September.
