BRIEF: 1 dead, 1 wounded in South Side shootings

Dec. 01--Two men were wounded, one fatally, in separate shootings Sunday afternoon on the South Side.

The fatal shooting happened about 3:10 p.m. on the 7200 block of South Vincennes Avenue in Englewood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman. A 22-year-old man suffered a wound to the back and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Sweeney said.

The man was identified as Darnell Williams, of the 600 block of West Cermak Road in Chicago, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 5:23 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner. After an autopsy Monday, the cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.

Police had no information on the circumstances of the shooting by about 9 p.m.

Earlier Sunday, a 52-year-old man was shot in the city's Chatham neighborhood. That shooting happened about 1:45 p.m. in the 8900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, Sweeney said. The man suffered a wound to the leg and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, said Sweeney, citing preliminary information.

Area South detectives were investigating both attacks.
