2 dead, at least 6 wounded in shootings on South and West sides

Dec. 16--Two people were killed and at least five others were wounded in separate shootings Monday on the city's West and South sides.

The latest shooting happened about 4:43 p.m. on the 5700 block of South Michigan Avenue in the city's Washington Park neighborhood, said police. At least four people were wounded in that shooting.

Another shooting happened about 2:40 p.m. on the 700 block of North Kedzie Avenue in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood, in the parking lot of the Richard M. Daley Library.

A 23-year-old man and another person were getting out of a vehicle when a group of people ran up and opened fire on them, striking the 23-year-old man repeatedly in his body.

The 23-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

The Daley library was closed following the shooting, a spokesman for the Chicago Public Library said.

Shortly before noon, a teen was fatally wounded on the 5800 block of South Morgan Street in the city's Englewood neighborhood, said police.

The 18-year old was initially taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital where he died, according to Police News Affairs Officer Bari Lemmon.

He was identified as Shamar Thompson of the 5500 block of South Morgan Street, according

Preliminary reports said Thompson was walking on Morgan Street when someone in a dark red van approached and started firing in his direction, said Lemmon.

Thompson, who was shot multiple times in his back and leg, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

About 4:30 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the 900 block of North Lawler Avenue in the city's Austin neighborhood.

The man was shot in his left leg and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

Earlier Monday, a 20-year-old was shot multiple times in the Brainerd neighborhood. That shooting happened on the 700 block of West 93rd Street, said police.

Preliminary information said someone in a gray vehicle fired shots at the man, striking him in his abdomen, arm and leg. He was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, said police.

No one was in custody for any of the shootings and police were investigating.
