2 dead, 10 wounded in shootings across the city overnight

Aug. 30--A man and a 16-year-old boy were killed and at least 10 people have been wounded in separate shootings since late Saturday morning across the city, officials said.

The 16-year-old boy was shot to death and a 17-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting around 1 a.m. Sunday in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

Both teenagers were standing on a sidewalk in the 8200 block of South Ingleside Avenue when a male attacker approached them and fired shots, Greer said.

The 16-year-old was struck in the chest and was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Greer said.

The 17-year-old was hit in the leg and was also taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where his condition stabilized.

About 11:05 p.m. Saturday, a 44-year-old man was shot to death in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The man was standing on a sidewalk in the 6000 block of South Throop Street when a male gunman came out of a black SUV and fired shots, police said.

The man was struck in the head and back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, said Officer Jose Estrada, a police spokesman.

In other shootings:

--A 52-year-old man was hurt in a shooting around 4:45 a.m. Sunday in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the Far South Side, Estrada said. The man was sleeping in his car in the 9100 block of South Anthony Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he was struck in his left ear, Estrada said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Estrada said.

--About 4:05 a.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old man was critically hurt and a 38-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, Estrada said. The two were outside in the 3300 block of West Walnut Street when an unknown attacker approached them and fired shots, Estrada said.

Both men were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment, Estrada said. The 28-year-old was struck in the head. He was listed in critical condition, Estrada said. The 38-year-old was hit in the left thigh, and his condition stabilized.

--About 3:40 a.m. Sunday, a 19-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, Estrada said. The man was driving eastbound in the 2800 block of West Augusta Boulevard when an attacker standing nearby fired shots at his vehicle, Estrada said. The man was struck in the hand and was listed in good condition at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, Estrada said.

--Around 2:05 a.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were wounded in a shooting in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Greer said. The two were standing on a sidewalk in the 1800 block of West 59th Street when an attacker approached them and fired shots, Greer said.

The woman was shot in the back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Greer said, and the man was shot in the foot and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital. Both of their conditions were stabilized.

--About 6 p.m. Saturday, a 26-year-old man was wounded in a shooting on the 5500 block of South Shields Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The man was sitting inside a vehicle in traffic in the 5500 block of South Shields Avenue when another car pulled up alongside and someone inside it fired shots, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman. The man was struck in the back and managed to drive himself to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Alfaro said.

--Earlier Saturday, another man was shot farther south in the city's Morgan Park neighborhood. That shooting happened about 11:35 a.m. on the 11100 block of South Aberdeen Street, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a police spokeswoman.

An 18-year-old man was outside when someone approached and shot him in the left lower leg. He was taken in good condition to Roseland Community Hospital, Lemmon said.

--About an hour before the Morgan Park attack, a 37-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting on the city's West Side. That shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. on the 4400 block of West Lexington Street in the Lawndale neighborhood, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman.

Preliminary reports indicate the victim was standing outside when a tan sedan pulled up and someone inside fired shots, Sedevic said.

The man was struck in the groin area. He was taken in fair condition to Stroger Hospital, Sedevic said.

No one was in custody as a result of the shootings, and police were investigating.
