The shooting occurred about 6:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of Courtland Avenue, near the intersection of Venice Boulevard and Hoover Street, said Lt. Cliff Humphris of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The 14-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, Humphris said.

The 16-year-old boy was taken to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where he was listed in critical condition.
