BRIEF: 2 major donations equip Lake County police with anti-overdose drug

Nov. 19--The Chicago Tribune Media Group's Mundelein Review reports: Lake County is now among only a few counties in the country to have police carry a nasal spray that reverses the effects of an overdose caused by opiates like heroin and painkillers, officials announced Tuesday.

Following two major donations, in all, 32 Lake County departments are equipping their officers with the drug. Known as Narcan, or under the trade name Naloxone, the drug does not cause any harm if given to someone who isn't overdosing. The spray comes in a vial about an inch tall and needs to be combined with a small push-pump and a nasal mist sprayer.

"We will be one of only a handful of counties in the country to equip law enforcement officers with the lifesaving antidote," Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim said.
