BRIEF: 2 killed when car crashes into tree in Park Forest

June 10--Two people were killed when a car crashed into a tree in Park Forest early Wednesday morning, police said.

Officers were called to the accident at the corner of Western Avenue and Algonquin Street about 12:31 a.m., according to Park Forest police.

The driver of the car had fled, and two passengers were taken to hospitals where they were pronounced dead.

The driver later showed up at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where he was taken into custody, police said.

Police could not provide more details, including the ages and genders of the passengers and how the crash happened.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed two people were killed, but also did not have details.
