April 01--Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon in Hawthorne in a shooting that was interrupted by a Hawthorne police officer, prompting the officer to open fire, authorities said.
An officer on routine patrol encountered a man shooting at a woman and a child around 12:40 p.m. near the intersection of Kornblum and Rosecrans avenues, according to the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.
The officer, the lone policeman at the scene, opened fire, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.
The alleged gunman, a man, and the woman he was targeting were both pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff's officials said.
The child was wounded by gunfire and was transported to the hospital. The child's condition wasn't immediately known.
The officer, whose name was not released, was not injured.
