BRIEF: 2 found dead in fire on SW Side

May 29--A man and a woman were found dead in a fire on the Southwest Side Thursday afternoon, officials said.

At about 2:50 p.m. firefighters were called to the 3600 block of West 55th Place in the West Elsdon neighborhood, according to Larry Langford, spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the structure when someone reported a couch on fire, Langford said. When they arrived they found two people dead, he said.

Police said they have opened a death investigation after they found a 22-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman dead, said Chicago police spokesman Thomas Sweeney.

According to a police source, the two were mother and son. The woman was found bloody, with her legs tied up and the man was found with multiple stab wounds.

The fire was in the basement of the home.

No other information was available.
