BRIEF: 2 firefighters injured battling house fire in Park Forest

Jan. 09--Two firefighters were injured and five people were displaced after a house fire in south suburban Park Forest on Thursday evening, authorities said.

The fire started around 10:50 p.m. at a home in the 200 block of Lee Street, said Park Forest Fire Chief Bruce Ziegle.

Two firefighters were injured and transported to area hospitals for evaluation. Their conditions were not immediately available, Ziegle said.

The fire also displaced two adults and three children, who were out of the house when fire personnel got to the scene. Damage to the home was estimated at about $100,000, Ziegle said.

Ten different fire departments responded and were on the scene for more than four hours, battling the blaze, Ziegle said. Crews initially had trouble with one of the fire hydrants that stopped working due to the cold temperatures, Ziegle said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
