Woman dies following car, semi wreck

March 29--A 23-year-old Brighton Park neighborhood woman died and another person was critically injured after a collision between a car and a semi tractor trailer Sunday morning in the Lower West Side community.

Sonia Vargas, of the 3500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, was pronounced dead at 6:08 a.m. at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The crash happened about 5:20 a.m. in the 3100 block of South Damen Avenue where the road passes over the Stevenson Expressway (I-55).

The woman who died was a passenger in a 2008 Dodge sedan that was being driven north on Damen by another female when it hit the passenger side of the trailer of a semi truck that was making a left turn to enter northbound Damen after exiting I-55, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

The car's driver was also taken to Stroger and she was listed in critical condition, said Sedevic.

No other injuries were reported in the crash. Police had north-south traffic blocked off following the crash.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is handling the case and there have been no citations as of Sunday afternoon.
