BRIEF: 2 Chicago-area singers advance on 'The Voice'

Nov. 12--Two Chicago-area singers advanced to the top 12 of "The Voice" Wednesday while one Chicago singer was eliminated.

Jeffery Austin, who grew up in St. Charles, and South Side native Mark Hood moved on to the next round of live performances. Irish rocker Keith Semple, who lives in Chicago, left the NBC show after failing to earn enough votes from the public and a save from his mentor, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

Austin, who was called "masterful" by mentor Gwen Stefani, was the first singer to advance based on votes from the viewers. He sang "Say You Love Me" by Jessie Ware on Monday.

Hood, who sang Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" on Tuesday, did not garner the public's vote but was saved by coach Pharrell Williams.

"I'm just going to go out on a limb. Mark, I'm gonna stick with you," Williams said Wednesday.

"The Voice," which is in its ninth season, typically airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
