BRIEF: 2 charged with selling stolen iPhones, counterfeit merchandise

Dec. 18--Two suburban men have been arrested after police say they sold stolen iPhones, untaxed cigarettes and counterfeit merchandise at several stores.

Asad A. Abumuslem of Oak Lawn and Saad Abdulhadi of Midlothian each were charged with felony theft and financial crime after a 10-month police investigation called Operation Clean Break, according to a news release from Chicago police.

Police investigating businesses suspected of buying stolen iPhones and reselling them to their customers also found they were selling counterfeit products and untaxed cigarettes, the release said.

Police did not immediately have information on where the stores selling the contraband items are located.

Officers recovered about $68,000, a "sizable quantity" of untaxed cigarettes and three vehicles, one of them a Mercedes, according to police.

Abumuslem, 52, and Abdulhadi, 22, both are expected to appear in court Friday.
