BRIEF: 2 babies born a minute into new year at suburban hospitals

Jan. 01--Two babies were born at suburban hospitals one minute into the new year, including one whose mother is a labor and delivery nurse.

Maximus Edward Maise was born at 12:01 a.m. at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, a spokeswoman said.

Maximus, who weighed 8 pounds, is the son of Nick and Megan Maise. Megan Maise works at Good Shepherd as a nurse in the labor and delivery department. The delivering physician was obstetrician Randy Zimmerman.

Krystina Cozzie of South Elgin gave birth to a boy at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village at 12:01 a.m., said Matt Wakely, spokesman for Alexian Brothers Health System. Preston Scott Cozzie Jr. weighted in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces.

Baby Preston wasn't expected until Jan. 7, but made an early appearance after an emergency C-section, his mother said.

"We weren't really planning on it," said Krystina, who received a basket of goodies and large stuffed animal from the hospital. "This is something that just happened. ... It's been an amazing experience."
