BRIEF: $1M bail for man accused in Englewood fatal shooting

Aug. 23--A 22-year-old man is accused of participating in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old in Englewood, prosecutors said.

The incident happened Aug. 19 on the 7400 block of South Harvard Avenue, prosecutors said.

The victim, Dwayne Thomas, was on the front steps of a house when a suspect walked up. The two got into an argument, and people inside the house came to the window to check out the noise, prosecutors said.

Devonte Watson, 22, walked up to the home and stood outside the gate, prosecutors said.

The unnamed suspect, who has not been charged, pulled out a gun, pointed it at the victim and shot him twice in the face, once in the chin and once in the cheek, prosecutors said.

Two friends who were with the victim ran. Watson pulled out a handgun and pointed it at them, but the gun jammed, prosecutors said.

Watson and the other man then fled, prosecutors said.

Watson was found and arrested a block away within the hour, prosecutors said. Watson, of the 7400 block of South Normal Avenue, has been charged with murder.

Cook County Circuit Judge Laura Marie Sullivan set Watson's bond at $1 million during a hearing Saturday afternoon.
