Oct. 28--16th Street Theater has announced its 2016 season.
The company committed to gender and ethnic parity kicks off the season with "Yasmina's Necklace" (Jan. 21 -- Feb. 27) by Rohina Malik. Artistic director Ann Filmer will direct the new play about a young Iraqi-Puerto Rican who strays from his cultural identity until a new relationship reminds him of his heritage.
Karen Zacarias' comedy "The Book Club Play" (April 7 -- May 14) is up next. Kevin Christopher Fox will direct the play about tenuous group dynamics amongst book lovers.
"Carroll Gardens" (Sep. 1 -- Oct. 8) by A. Zell Williams follows with a tale of two childhood friends who collide later in life with conflicting ideas about race, class and who they both became. Ann Filmer will direct the new play.
Additionally, "Killadelphia" and "Dogs of Rwanda," both written and performed by Sean Christopher Lewis, will run in rep Oct. 20 -- Nov. 19. "Killadelphia" follows the inmates of a Philadelphia prison to examine the effect of crime on communities. Lewis revisits a trip along the Rwandan border in "Dogs Of Rwanda."
