Teen killed at Southwest Side gas station, 6 wounded in other shootings

Aug. 14--Authorities have identified a young man shot to death as he sat in a car at a Southwest Side gas station, one of seven people hit by gunfire in Chicago from Thursday through early Friday.

Ricardo Mendez-Bucio, 18, was shot about 2:55 p.m. at the B Quick Mart and Gas in the 4700 block of South Western Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood, authorities said. He died after being taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, fire and police officials said.

Mendez-Bucio was in a car when two people walked up and fired shots, according to Officer Thomas Sweeney, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

A dark purple Toyota Camry sat parked at pump No. 1, its hazard lights flashing and a passenger side window shattered. Gang graffiti was scrawled on the gas pump.

In other shootings:

--A 65-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood about 3:15 a.m. Friday, said Officer Ron Gaines, a spokesman for Chicago police.

The man walked into Mount Sinai Hospital with several gunshot wounds. He told police he was shot in the 900 block of North Pulaski Road, Gaines said.

The man was listed in serious condition. No other information was available.

--About 2:34 a.m. Friday, a 26-year-old man also walked into Mount Sinai Hospital after getting shot in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, Gaines said.

The man was in the 3800 block of West Roosevelt Road when he was shot in the head, Gaines said. The man's condition was stabilized.

--About 11:32 p.m. Thursday, a 22-year-old man was wounded during a robbery in the Stony Island Park neighborhood on the South Side, Gaines said.

The man was walking in the 8200 block of South Anthony Avenue when someone walked up to him and announced a robbery, Gaines said. The attacker stole the man's cash, shot him in the leg and fled, Gaines said.

The man was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Gaines said.

--About 9:19 p.m., a 36-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, Gaines said.

The man was standing outside in the 12000 block of South Michigan Avenue when someone walked up to him and fired shots, Gaines said.

The man was hit in the lower back and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

--In another shooting Thursday, an 18-year-old man was wounded in the neck and side about 12:35 p.m. in the 3400 block of West Flournoy Street, according to Sweeney.

The 18-year-old got himself to Rush University Medical Center, where he was in serious condition.

--Earlier, a 20-year-old man was riding a bicycle about 11:30 a.m. in the 10900 block of South Ewing Avenue when two assailants confronted him and one opened fire, Sweeney said.

The 20-year-old was grazed in the neck and wounded in the lower leg, Sweeney said.

He was taken to Advocate Christ in fair to serious condition, said Juan Hernandez, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.
