Oct. 09--One person was being treated after firefighters responded to a carbon monoxide leak at a small South Austin neighborhood apartment building, officials said.
Crews were called to the building in the 5000 block of West Maypole Avenue about 8 p.m. After testing, they determined that there were carbon monoxide levels of 1,000 parts per million, according to the Chicago Fire Department's news office.
One person was being treated and evaluated at the scene, said department spokesman Larry Langford.
The boiler in the building was shut down and the carbon monoxide allowed to dissipate, he said.
Safe levels of carbon monoxide are below an exposure of 35 ppm for an hour, and at 1,000 ppm, a person can usually lose consciousness in about an hour, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
