1 killed, 5 wounded in separate shootings

Sept. 23--A man has died and five other people have been wounded since Tuesday afternoon in separate shootings on the South and West sides, police said.

A 28-year-old man was fatally shot in the 9200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Burnside neighborhood, police said.

The man was shot in the head about 3:40 p.m., police said. The man, who was a known gang member, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. He was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Most recently, a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg around 2:10 a.m. Wednesday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

The man was walking in the 5100 block of South Winchester Avenue when someone got out of a vehicle and fired shots, Greer said.

He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, Greer said.

About 1 a.m., a 28-year-old man was wounded while walking in the 1700 block of West 77th Street in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, Greer said.

He was taken in good condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park.

About 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy was wounded in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side,

The teen was walking on a sidewalk in the 600 block of South Homan Avenue when he heard gunfire and realized he was struck, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

He was shot in the right knee and grazed in the chest. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

Late Tuesday, police officers blocked off the Citgo gas station near Homan Avenue and Harrison Street as they scanned sidewalks and streets for evidence.

Around 8:50 p.m., a 28-year-old woman was shot in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, Alfaro said.

The woman was standing on a sidewalk outside a bar in the 5900 block of West Madison Street when a male approached another man who was sitting in front of the bar on a milk crate, police said.

The attacker said "You still want to fight" then pulled a handgun from his waistband and began shooting at the man who was seated but missed him. One of the bullets ricocheted and struck the woman in the right ankle, according to police.

The woman was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where her condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

At 4:38 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the 5000 block of West LeMoyne Street in the Austin neighborhood, police said.

The man was standing outside when a gunman emerged from a nearby alley and started shooting, hitting him in the left leg. The attacker fled in a vehicle, Alfaro said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, police said.

No one was in custody as a result of the shootings as of early Wednesday.
