Jan. 03--An 81-year-old woman died after being injured in a fire that broke out in a high-rise apartment building Friday morning in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood on the North Side.
The fire started around 9 a.m. on the 26th floor of a building at 5333 N. Sheridan Road, according to Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.
The fire was quickly put out and smoke did not spread through the building, fire officials said.
Ann Turner, who lived in the building, was taken in serious condition to Weiss Memorial Hospital, according to fire officials and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
She was later transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
According to a police report, the fire department's battalion chief said the victim was smoking and accidentally ignited the chair she was sitting in.
No other information was available.
