May 10--A UPS truck driver from Wisconsin was killed after his truck went out of control and struck a median early Tuesday on I-294 near the Hinsdale-Western Springs border, police said.
Glen D. Dantuma, 61, of Hartford, Wis., was pronounced dead at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, according to Illinois State Police.
Dantuma was driving a semi tractor hauling a double trailer and going south on I-294 near Ogden Avenue about 2:30 a.m. when for "unknown reasons," he lost control, ran off the roadway to the left and struck the concrete median, according to a news release from state police.
The impact caused one of two trailers to "overturn and breach" onto the northbound side of I-294, police said.
Many packages from the trailer ended up on the roadway. Dan Cardillo, media relations manager for UPS, said the company would "triage" the truck's cargo.
"We'll look to see what is still suitable for delivery," Cardillo said.
In the case of damaged items, the company would work to accommodate retailers and shippers, he said.
The crash caused major traffic delays on both directions of I-294 through the morning rush hour. It remains under investigation, police said.
