Dec. 28--A woman from Iowa was killed and several other people sent to hospitals in good condition after a charter bus crashed Monday morning on the Stevenson Expressway on the Southwest Side, authorities said.
Nicole M. Underwood 21, of Des Moines, who was a passenger on the bus, has died, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.
A Burlington Trailways bus was traveling on the inbound Stevenson near Damen Avenue when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control and the bus struck a construction arrow board sign, according to the ISP statement.
Illinois State Police Trooper Ark Wozniak said the crash happened at 6:50 a.m.
A woman was initially critically injured and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, said Chicago Fire Chief Juan Hernandez.
Five other people were taken in good condition to hospitals, two to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and three to St. Anthony Hospital. Additionally, 28 people declined medical attention on the scene, Hernandez said.
The bus was on its way to Chicago from Omaha, Neb., according to the chief.
The far right two lanes remain closed, but traffic is able to get by in the far left lane and shoulder as of 10 a.m.
