April 09--A 71-year-old man was killed and four others were hurt in a pile-up on the Eisenhower Expressway early Saturday morning.
The crash involved at least 13 cars and happened around 12:40 a.m. in the outbound lanes of Interstate 290 near Central Avenue, according to Illinois State Police.
Snowy weather and ice contibuted to the accident, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Alexander Diaz.
"It was just one giant chain reaction," Diaz said. "They just kept on piling up."
A 71-year-old man was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center after suffering injuries as a result of the accident, Diaz said.
Four people, whose ages and genders were not immediately available, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Diaz said. Two of them were taken to West Suburban Medical Center, and two others were taken to Loyola University Medical Center.
As of 4:15 a.m, all outbound lanes on I-290 near Central Avenue were shut down as officials investigated the crash. Diaz said he expects the expressway to be closed for at least another three hours.
No other information was available about the accident.
